House at Thomson Ridge is a 2-storey plus 1 Attic semi-detached house for a family of 4. The owner wanted the house to be timeless, of subtle elegance and functional. To achieve a clean look, the façade is kept to sleek lines and distinguished boxes, represented by ledges and white walls respectively. The varying textures and tectonic of the white walls, coupled with selective dark grey elements helps to create this dynamic building form. The ledges and slit windows are placed strategically to divide the massive blank wall into sizeable canvases, where light can streak into the spaces within.
On top of fulfilling the practical space requirements of the brief, OWAA wants to value-add to the experience of arrival and connectivity. The addition of the entrance threshold area and the usage of screens helps to unveil the spaces within, apart from being a practical area for storing shoes. The family get-together spaces adopt an open concept that promotes visual connectivity across the spaces and connectivity to the surrounding landscape. Cross-ventilation across each level is facilitated through a large staircase’s central void. The floating staircase and clerestory window allows light to filter through the house at different times of the day, enhancing the airy atmosphere within the interior.
