Jervois Integrated Rehabilitation Centre – First Private Integrated Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine Rehabilitation Centre in Singapore

Location:
106 Jervois Road, Singapore

GFA:
Approx. 720m2

OWAA has been invited to spruce up, upgrade and convert an existing colonial bungalow at 106 Jervois Road which is under a short-term lease from SLA, to Singapore’s first Integrated western and traditional Chinese medicine rehabilitation centre. OWAA has been commissioned to be the architectural and ID designer as well as to provide QP services for the project.

Jervois Rehabilitation Centre involves retrofitting an existing 2-storey pre-independence colonial bungalow, including addition of new lift facility, into a rehabilitation centre with a new commercial café and new gym tonic studio. An existing open field has also been converted into an outdoor garden and activity deck. The interior spaces are also completely gutted out to achieve a fully reconfigured and retrofitted interior.

As the rehabilitation centre is primarily meant for ambulatory patients, much care has been taken to ensure mobility, maneuverability, safety and comfort for the patients. For example, doors and corridors are designed to be wide with resting spaces incorporated deliberately into the layouts. Neutral colours with flat surfaces and curved corners are used to allow for a safe and comfortable environment. Soft and indirect lighting are provided to achieve a soothing ambience. Lush landscaping lined the footpaths and buildings to add to the therapeutic quality of the development.

OWAA aims to achieve a design that is quiet yet distinctive. In short, we hope to have achieved a slow, soothing and safe space for the patients, caregivers and staffs in this integrated rehabilitation centre.
